Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz talks at a grade school set up of his more established sibling, Dave. Both are Olympic gold decoration victors, however Mark feels dominated by Dave. Imprint is reached by donor and wrestling aficionado John E. du Pont, a beneficiary to the E.I. du Pont family fortune, who organizes to fly Mark to his domain in Pennsylvania where du Pont has assembled a private wrestling preparing office. Du Pont welcomes Mark to join his wrestling group, Team Foxcatcher, to be paid to prepare for the World Championship.
Mark acknowledges the offer, with du Pont asking him to enroll Dave also. Dave decays for his better half and two youngsters, who are settled where they live, so Mark moves to Pennsylvania alone. Mark stays in a friendly visitor house and is welcomed there later in the night by du Pont. Through preparing with his new partners and du Pont's budgetary bolster, Mark exceeds expectations with Foxcatcher, winning a Gold Medal at the 1987 World Wrestling Championships.
Du Pont applauds him, and they build up a kinship. Du Pont acquaints Mark with cocaine, which he begins to utilize frequently. He trusts in Mark, whom he now calls a genuine companion, letting him know how his mom, Jean du Pont, paid a kid to go about as his companion. Jean advises her child that she thinks wrestling is a "low game" and dislikes seeing him "being low". One day, Mark and his partners in Foxcatcher take the morning off from preparing to watch blended combative technique on TV.
Enraged by this, du Pont verbally and physically rebukes him, saying that he will enroll Dave by any methods necessary.Dave chooses to move with his family to Pennsylvania so he can join Foxcatcher. His self-regard harmed by du Pont, Mark chooses to work and prepare alone, pushing endlessly du Pont and even Dave. As Team Foxcatcher gets ready to enter the preliminaries for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, du Pont's mom is escorted into du Pont's rec center to watch him mentor his group. He unadroitly exhibits fundamental moves for her and alternate wrestlers.
Jean leaves in disdain subsequent to seeing du Pont give his back to his student.At the 1988 Olympic Trials in Pensacola, Florida, Mark performs inadequately, losing his first match. Irritated by his disappointment, Mark decimates his room, cries and goes on an eating fling. Dave figures out how to break into his room and is frightened at his sibling's condition. They work hotly so Mark can make his weight class. As Mark activities, Dave keeps du Pont from talking with Mark.
Mark contends all around ok to win his match and make the Olympic group. Dave sees that du Pont is truant, discovering that he cleared out for Pennsylvania in the wake of being told his mom died. After coming back to the home, Mark tells Dave that "you and I both realize that I cannot stay" at Foxcatcher once the Olympics are over and requests that Dave leave with him. A narrative supported by du Pont about his endeavors with Team Foxcatcher is made, amid which Dave is requested that applaud him as mentor and guide.
Mark loses his matches in Seoul, after which he leaves Team Foxcatcher. While Dave keeps on living at du Pont's domain and train with Foxcatcher, as a condition for his residual he arranges a game plan with du Pont to keep on supporting Mark financially. Later, du Pont is seen sitting alone in his house's trophy room viewing the narrative about Team Foxcatcher, which closes with Mark complimenting du Pont at a service delineated earlier. Du Pont calls his bodyguard and drives to Dave's home, where he discovers him in the carport dealing with his auto radio.
As Schultz methodologies du Pont's auto to welcome him, du Pont moves down his window, asks Dave "Do you have an issue with me?," and shoots him three times at short proximity. Dave's better half, Nancy, calls 9-1-1; and, as du Pont drives off, she keeps running outside to her significant other, who kicks the bucket in her arms. Du Pont is later captured outside his own home, and the film closes indicating Mark as he contends in a confine battling match with the group's cheers ringing in his mind.
