Most of the story is set in and around the Aokigahara Forest, a woods at the northwest base of Mount Fuji in Japan known as a prevalent destination for the self-destructive. Sara Price, an American lady, gets a telephone call from the Japanese police advising her that they think her harried twin sister Jess is dead, as she was seen going into Aokigahara woods. In spite of the worries of her life partner, Rob, she excursions to Japan and touches base at the lodging where her sister was remaining.
At her inn, Sara meets a correspondent named Aiden. They drink together, and she lets him know of her folks' passing in a plastered driving mischance, which her sister saw, however Sara did not. Aiden welcomes her to go into the backwoods with him and a recreation center aide, Michi, so she can search for her sister. As the three enter Aokigahara, Michi tells Sara that Jess has undoubtedly murdered herself. Somewhere down in the forested areas, the gathering finds a yellow tent that Sara perceives as Jess's. With sunset drawing nearer, Michi recommends they leave a note for Jess and leave. Sara cannot, and Aiden volunteers to stay with her as the night progressed.
That night, Sara hears stirring in the hedges and, trusting it might be Jess, hurries into the forested areas after them. Sara finds a Japanese young lady, Hochiko, who cases to know Jess. The young lady cautions Sara not to trust Aiden and escapes at the sound of his voice. Sara endeavors to pursue her yet falls and loses her. The following day, Aiden and Sara get to be lost and start to stroll around the woods. As they walk, Sara's suspicions are raised and she requests Aiden to give her his telephone and finds a photo of Jess on it. Aiden denies any association with Jess, yet Sara keeps running into the backwoods alone. While running she starts to hear voices advising her to pivot.
She seems, by all accounts, to be unflinching by this until she hears the voice straightforwardly behind her. She pivots to see a hanging body and keeps on fleeing. She then falls into an underground surrender and goes oblivious, later she awakens and finds that she is in the cavern with Hochiko, who ends up being a yūrei. Hochiko then transforms into what seems, by all accounts, to be a "satanic figure". Sara then runs the inverse way towards what seems, by all accounts, to be Aiden. Aiden discovers her and bails her out of the hollow and, with some persuading, they keep on walking together.
Aiden conveys Sara to an old officer station he would found while searching for her. Inside, Sara hears her sister's voice originating from the cellar and finds a note which suggests that Aiden is holding Jess hostage in the storm cellar. Persuaded that he is a danger, Sara assaults and executes a sickened Aiden with a little kitchen blade. As he kicks the bucket, Sara understands that Aiden was coming clean and that the photo on his telephone, the voice at the cellar entryway and the note had all been mental trips. In the storm cellar of the officer station, Sara sees a dream of the night her folks kicked the bucket from Jess' perspective. It was really a homicide suicide started by her dad. The apparition of her dad all of a sudden shows up and thrusts toward her, getting her wrist. She removes his fingers from her wrist and getaways the station.
Running into the backwoods, she sees Jess running toward the lights of the inquiry party. Sara calls to her sister, who can't hear her. She understands that her getaway from the officer station was another pipedream. When she cut at her dad's fingers she was really cutting profound into her own wrists, and is presently passing on from blood misfortune in the storm cellar. As she succumbs to her injuries, a yūrei maneuvers Sara into the woods floor. Her particularly alive sister is saved by the pursuit party and clarifies that the sentiment her sister is gone and it is accepted that Jess knows Sara is dead. As the inquiry party leaves Michi is seen gazing at a figure and acknowledges, past the point of no return, that it is Sara's soul.
